AVD Ep15:Analysis of Vietnam-China relations: Progress and Challenges

Guest Speaker: Dr. PATH Kosal, Associate Professor of Political Science at the Brooklyn College, City University of New York

Host: HIM Sothearoth

Vietnam and China have a long and deep connection since early history. Despite of the yearly bound, Vietnam can be described as one of the most confronting states toward China, due to the overlapped claiming territories in the South China Sea. However, political and security motives are not the only guidance for states’ relations. Economic cooperation and development have become the primary goal in the international arena.

Even though, there is a contradiction between them, Vietnam cannot deny the fact that China has emerged as a global economic superpower. At the same time, China also cannot deny the strategic interest of Vietnam as the country is a member of ASEAN and also one of the Indo-Pacific states. As there is uncertainty and complexity in relationships, Asian Vision Dialogue seeks to find the answer to this grey connection with the contribution from Dr. PATH Kosal. Dr. Kosal will analyse the relationship between Vietnam and China by focusing specifically on the progress and challenges of their bilateral relations.
